How to learn about safety? Watch people dance with umbrellas..

With the onset of winter weather, vehicle and pedestrian collisions are at their highest, so the City wants to remind drivers and walkers to be more aware of their surroundings.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I can’t think of a better way to remind people about safety during the Holidays than to have people do a “safety” dance with umbrellas in Occidental Square Park.

It could be bad, it could be good, and on the off-chance that it’s amazing, I’m definitely going to show up.

(you probably can’t tell from my tone, but I’m super excited about it)

WHAT: Choreographed by Bobby Bonsey of Seattle flash mob fame, the public dance performance will employ brightly colored umbrellas and promises to leave unsuspecting spectators speechless.  The umbrellas used in the dance will also be placed in locations around the downtown core for pedestrians to use to stay dry as they cross busy intersections, as part of the SDOT pedestrian safety campaign.

WHEN: Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 2 p.m.

WHERE: Occidental Park, Occidental Ave. S and S Main St., Seattle (possibly other locations as well)

p.s. All joking aside, apparently last year’s safety campaign made 70% of the survey respondents more aware of pedestrian safety.  So if you want to become even more aware than you could after watching people dance with umbrellas, members from SDOT are singing “amusing, safety-themed songs” at the Figgy Pudding Competition today
