(PARK)ing Day 2010 in Pioneer Square

The Miller Hull Partnership is participating in PARK(ing) Day 2010, a a grassroots, “open-source” art project that challenges people to rethink the way streets are used.

In cities around the globe on Friday, artists, activists and citizens will temporarily transform metered parking spaces into public parks and other social spaces, as part of an annual event called “PARK(ing) Day. Since 2005, the project has blossomed into a worldwide grassroots movement: PARK(ing) Day 2009 included more than 700 “PARK” installations in more than 140 cities in 21 countries on six continents. This year, the project continues to expand to urban centers across the globe, including first-time PARK installation in Tehran, Iran.

Where:
Pioneer Square: Western & Yesler

When:
Friday, September 17th 10 am-2 pm

The Concept:
a parallel universe
parking for people; not cars

Miller Hull will explore the allocation of the urban landscape to vehicles in their 2010 PARK(ING) DAY installation.

The firm’s sculpture of tires will visualize typical land use patterns devoted to cars. Moving toward a society that values active community space over vehicle-exclusive uses, “a parallel universe” will feature local musicians and salsa dancing including performances by Miller Hull architect Mark Johnson of Amateur Radio Operator and Joe Syverson of Joseph Giant and Final Spins.

(I know I would go, if only to see architects dance)
