Pirate landing launches Seafair’s boatload of festivals (Seattle Times)
Take a step back in time at Pioneer Square Fire Festival, commemorating local history with the Last Resort Fire Department and Seattle Metropolitan Police Museum display of vintage fire trucks and police cars. In addition, look for activities sponsored by the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. It’s at Occidental Square Park on Saturday.

Sea and Symphony (Wall Street Journal)
Seattle got its start as a rough-and-tumble frontier town, and you can still feel that past in the stone streets of Pioneer Square, the timeless bustle of Pike Place Market and the rusted hulls of ships that crawl through local waterways. But most of what’s going on here is about the present—the brick warehouses, dive bars and century-old storefronts that have been repurposed to suit a Seattle of bold chef-owned restaurants, handcrafted-cocktail bars, art galleries, rock venues and coffee shops where you can easily lose an afternoon.

Wayback Machine: Seattle struck gold in Dugdale (Sports Press NW)
Some stampeders struck gold, most did not (one estimate is that only 4,000 individuals found any gold at all.) A sawmiller named John Nordstrom (his story is explained in detail in the Klondike Gold Rush Museum in Pioneer Square) famously brought home $13,000 worth of gold, which he invested in a Seattle shoe store, owned by a cobbler he encountered in the gold fields. The shoe store became the foundation for the Nordstrom department store chain.

Tunnels, tolls and traffic: The environmental statement is out (Seattle Times)
Governments don’t have a coherent plan yet to reduce diversion, or to protect Pioneer Square from overflow traffic near the Sodo interchange, though meetings and discussions are underway. It will be interesting to see what ideas (if any) are in the FEIS. Are there ways to lower the toll rate? Would parking spaces, road lanes, or traffic signals be changed to protect the Square?

Conceived and constructed in Seattle’s Pioneer Square, Tarboo shirts are made with both ethical sourcing and quality in mind.
