Pioneer Square in the News

Pioneer Square is hot again (PSBJ)
The historic Pioneer Square district already is home to numerous tech companies, including a small — and very hush-hush — HTC development studio. But the neighborhood known for its picturesque red-brick buildings is undergoing a major transformation as companies such as game developer Zynga and data storage company Isilon Systems set up shop there.

Kress Building Sold for $29 million, JC Penney planned (Seattlest)
Potential bad news for downtown and Pioneer Square residents: the Kress Building (also known as the home to the central business district’s only grocery store), located at 1419 Third Ave, was sold over the weekend to a New York investment company for $29 million dollars. The space is slated to house a J.C. Penney, marking the chain’s first Seattle location in 30 years. [note: not sure why this is bad news for Pioneer Square residents…I don’t know anyone who gets their groceries there))

Seattle-based Super Geek League hosted the inaugural “Tomato Battle: Seattle” at Pioneer Square’s Pyramid Alehouse on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011. There were more than 50,000 overly ripe pieces of the fruit, and combatants tossed them at each other until all that was left was pulp and juice.

From cash to Kindles: Waiting for the world to catch up to convenience (GeekWire)
Like the booths at Seattle’s monthly First Thursday Art Walk in Pioneer Square, where last month I saw an artist use, well, Square. I first heard about the card scanning service and iPhone plug-in when early Twitter staffer Dom Sagolla showed it off around Seattle last spring, but I figured it’d stay stuck in the geek realm because most cool-seeming new things do. Yet there it was, on the artist’s iPhone, changing the equation.

Possible budget cuts could mean dangerous sex offenders go unsupervised (MyFox Spokane)
Two years ago, the DOC supervised 28,000 offenders in Washington state. Today, it supervises 17,000 offenders, a number which could drop drastically depending on which budget cut it is forced to choose. “My personal belief, areas such as Belltown, Pioneer Square, Capitol Hill are going to see a dramatic increase in street-level drug problems and everything that goes along with that,” Raymond said.

Blood, Teenage Riots, and Broken Drums: Fuzzy Cloaks Recount Their Worst Show Ever (Seattle Weekly)
They’ve only played about a dozen shows since their inception a couple months ago; hopefully this weekend’s will be nothing like the one they described to me as their worst show ever. This particular disaster was their second show, it occurred at Pioneer Square’s 619 Building, and they only got through two and a half songs.

The J&M Cafe: John Wayne, Sweet Bacon Jus, and a Chipotle Lamb Burger (Seattle Weekly)
Now, it features a revamped menu. For $8, start with the braised slab bacon. It instantly caught my eye, and really, who can say no (vegetarians, ignore this) to all-natural slab bacon, pepper-crusted and braised with maple syrup, served with mashed potatoes and sweet bacon jus?
