Art Outside the Box!

Celebrate Coast Salish public art in Pioneer Square!

The Pioneer Square Residents’ Council initiates their first public art project in the neighborhood Art Outside the Box! We are spreading art throughout the neighborhood on the Seattle Department of Transportation signal boxes (gray utility boxes that control traffic signals).

We asked the community what themes came to mind to shape this first phase of the project – five boxes on 1st Avenue S. The theme selected was Our First Community in recognition of the First People in Seattle’s First Neighborhood.

Through a collaboration with the Chief Seattle Club, a Pioneer Square social service and arts organization, we have reached out to Coast Salish artists through an open call. A jury panel of Native American art professionals, Indigenous community leaders and a Pioneer Square resident and business owner have selected 5 artists.

Funding generously provided by the Pioneer Square Residents’ Council and the Business Improvement Area of the Alliance for Pioneer Square.
