Furuya + Corgiat Building in Pioneer Square wins Preservation Award

According to the DJC, “the Furuya and Corgiat Building”  is a co-winner for Historic Seattle’s 2010 preservation award for best rehabilitation. (Furuya was renamed as the Pacific Commercial building because people couldn’t pronounce the real name)

To check out a great post detailing the rehabilitation of this building, including before and after photos, see the Main2 blog.

Historic Seattle’s website says that “the Furuya and Corgiat Buildings represent fascinating layers of Pioneer Square’s history. ”

Other interesting details about the Furuya building:

  • Constructed as a two-story substation for the Snoqualmie Falls Power Company
  • housed M. Furuya Co.,a Japanese import/export store
  • Three stories were added to the building ca. 1905
  • The upper two stories were removed after the 1949 earthquake
  • Home to Masin’s Furniture

The adjacent Corgiat Building (originally the Main Hotel):

  • contained single room occupancy units on upper floors
  • offices and Swannie’s bar on the first floor
  • The Comedy Underground in the basement

In 2006, Rob Brewster of Conover Bond and owner of the Arctic Club Hotel, acquired both buildings. According to their new Pacific Commercial Building website, the building will include 28,000 sq ft of creative, loft-style Class A office space and 17,250 sq ft of dynamic urban retail. Essentially, “the Pacific Commercial Building is the ultimate in-city space.”
