03 May Free parking during 1st Thursday!
Although I can stand as a testament to the fact that Pioneer Square usually has tons of (paid) parking, I understand that during big events, some people feel it’s difficult to find open spots. It’s also a pleasant surprise to have people work together to offer free parking in a downtown neighborhood.
I think it’s great that people drive in from all around the area to attend the First Thursday, but just as a reminder, Pioneer Square is one of the easiest places to get to with public transit (light rail, most bus lines, west seattle water taxi, bicycle, foot, etc).
For those of you who choose to drive, however, PSCA is piloting a new program called “Parking for Peanuts.” Starting this Thursday, May 6th, Merrill Place Garage will provide free parking for people who come down to participate in First Thursday.
To get the free parking, you may park in the garage between 5pm and 10pm, and when leaving, all you have to do is show the attendant either proof of purchase from a Pioneer Square business, or a business card from a participating gallery.
This is a great collaboration between the neighborhood and Merrill Place and I encourage you to give it a try. If it goes well, it will most likely continue throughout the summer, and more parking garages may also choose to participate.
