Seattle’s Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA) takes steps toward establishing a Pioneer Square location (Seattle Times)
The Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA) held an inaugural shindig on Aug. 5 in Pioneer Square’s Globe Building, the former home of the Elliott Bay Book Company, and it’s hosting two more events there this month and next. The gallery is angling to lease the space more permanently.

Seattle art fight: Who owns First Thursday? (Seattle PI)
The Art Walk concept, billed as the country’s first art walk, has become so successful that it has spawned a host of imitators and followers. The Seattle Art Museum and Henry Art Gallery also now do a First Thursday, in which they stay open late and offer free admission. The competition for calendar space, coupled with economic hard times, has begun to annoy some Pioneer Square gallery owners, who have long felt a sense of ownership over First Thursday.

Noted Seattle architect, activist Folke Nyberg dies at 76 (Seattle Times)
Architect Folke Nyberg died at his Seattle home Aug. 15 after a two-year battle with prostate cancer. He was a staunch advocate for affordable housing, public open space and neighborhood preservation, and has been credited with helping another Seattle architect, Victor Steinbrueck, preserve and maintain the Pike Place Market and Pioneer Square.
